Inspiration & process
Marine Life Conservation
For my first project, I chose the idea of marine life conservation due to my close ties to
nature and the environment. Going on long hikes and beach trips with my dad has been a
prominent memory of my childhood.Our biweekly trips to the Half Moon Bay beaches, such as
the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve, initially sparked my interest in sea life and the beach beauty. This
passion has taken me to Scouts, where I regularly go on camping trips that are located near lakes
and rivers, which at times, I get to swim in. As an imaginative young child, my main focus and
interest related to the ocean had always been mermaids. Their long shiny and glittery tails
seemed to captivate my mind for so long. As I grew older, learning more about the ocean’s
inhabitants, my favorite sea creature remained the same, a mermaid. Starting this project, I
quickly entered the same childish state of mind, designing a dress that would amaze and excite
my younger self. My favorite elements of a mermaid, from concepts of a glittery tail to a smooth
satin shell top were incorporated in the design.
